About Mike Calvert Toyota
Mike Calvert Toyota sits on South Loop West in Houston, serving buyers from Houston, Sugar Land, and Pearland. The dealership sells new and pre-owned Toyotas, from the Tacoma and Tundra to the Camry and RAV4, and runs a full service department, parts counter, and certified collision center.
The dealership already had strong brand recognition in Houston. What it wanted was to turn that recognition into search visibility on dealership and used vehicle terms, the searches buyers run before they ever type a dealership name.
The Challenge
A Large Dealership Site With Limited On-Page Control
Mike Calvert Toyota came to Funnel Boost Media wanting to rank for keywords such as used dealership, pre-owned cars, and pre-owned vehicle dealer in and around Houston. Those terms carry the highest commercial intent in automotive search, and the dealership was struggling to compete for them.
The difficulty wasn’t effort, it was the environment. The site is large, with thousands of inventory pages, and it runs on DealerOn, a third party dealership platform. We couldn’t just rewrite it. Every on-page change had to fit what the platform allowed and move on a vendor’s release schedule instead of ours. A site that size also changes daily as inventory turns over, so one round of optimization wouldn’t hold. This had to be an ongoing on-page program, not a one-time cleanup, with off-page work running alongside it to build the authority those terms demand.
The Solution
Building Pages Around How Buyers Actually Shop
This was a structure problem, not a content volume problem. One used inventory page was being asked to rank for dozens of model searches at once, so Google didn’t have a clear page to reward for any of them. Shoppers don’t search for “used cars.” They search for a Tacoma, a Tundra, a Camry.
We built dedicated pre-owned pages by model, each one written the way that buyer actually searches, then tied them back to the main used vehicles page so authority flowed both ways. Titles, headings, and metadata were rewritten to match search intent rather than inventory feed defaults. We strengthened internal linking between new, pre-owned, and service pages so the site read as one connected inventory instead of a pile of isolated listings. Off-page work reinforced the dealership’s local authority signals in the Houston market.
Page One for the Searches That Sell Cars
Average climb across 10 Keywords
We targeted model-level pre-owned terms because that’s where buying intent sits. Someone searching “toyota tacoma used cars” has already picked the vehicle and is choosing a dealer. We expected those pages to move before the broad category terms did, since a dedicated page answers a specific search better than a general inventory page can. That’s what happened, and it happened faster than we projected. Ten tracked keywords climbed an average of 62 positions.
Rankings were the point, but they aren’t the result. What matters to a dealership is whether more people show up and reach out. Both moved with the rankings.
