A Local Search Association (LSA) survey of internet users in the US was conducted in March 2017 by Burke. It shows that eight out of 10 participants identified search engines as their #1 choice to finding local businesses in 2016.
Even when given choices, which included both nondigital and digital sources, 80% chose a search engine.
Most Consumers Use Search Engines to Find Local Businesses
80% told researchers that they had used a search engine, just one week before the survey, to find a local service or product. And, 87% of the participants had used a search engine for local searches within the past month.
So, what was their second choice for finding local businesses? They cited company websites.
Many brick and mortar businesses still turn to white pages and yellow pages ads for local advertising and marketing. However, within the last year, these proved to have the lowest viral reach.
This survey also shows that consumers actually trust search engines to provide them with accurate information. As a matter of fact, the number of US Web users who trust the accuracy of search engines increased dramatically since last year.
Participants were also asked about their favorite sources of information when they’re actually ready to make a purchase… locally. 27% of the respondents said they turn to company websites. 24% said they use search engines.
With this in mind, the May 2016 LSA poll also included North American marketing professionals. It showed that 68% of these experts believe that search engine optimization (SEO) is vital to local businesses hoping to gain more local customers.
